Feeling nostalgic, when talking about a birthday. It was midnight when my room-mates just came to know about my birthday. Though, not possible to arrange a cake in that wee hours, they made it as grand as a birthday cake, by just lighting a matchstick on a gulab jamun. College days are the best days of life… 🙂

How to make Bread Gulab Jamun with step by step photos:

1. Chop the bread slices into pieces and put into a mixer and ground it to a coarse powder.

2. Take out into a mixing bowl. Pour milk little by little. Make use of your fingers to make a soft dough or until you can make balls out of it. It will be little sticky. Don’t add too much of milk.  Make small lemon size balls and keep aside.

3. Place water + sugar in a vessel and let the sugar melt completely. Then add rest of the ingredients. Cook for another 2 minutes. Turn off the flame.

4. Meanwhile, heat oil on a medium flame for deep frying. Fry the balls till dark brown. Don’t cook on high flame, though, it looks brown from outside, it won’t be cooked inside.

5. Drain the balls and add it to the warm syrup.

6. Do this to the rest of the balls until done.

7. Let it remain for few hours in syrup, to soak well.

TIP :If you want it real fast, you can add hot jamuns in boiling syrup and cook for 1-2 minutes. Turn off the flame. Let it remain undisturbed till it cools down.
8. Serve it warm or chilled along with ice cream or as it is.

RECIPE NOTES
You can cut out the crust of bread from all sides or else can include it, like how I did. As brown bread are dense, it will need more milk to get a soft texture. Dont knead the dough, you just have to soak it and make it mushy. Otherwise, you will get hard balls.
TIP : If you want it real fast, you can add hot jamuns in boiling syrup and cook for 1-2 minutes. Turn off the flame. Let it remain undisturbed till it cools down.
